Having an email link on your website is a great way to make it easy for your visitors to reach you.  All that have to do is click on the link and it will open their email client (such as Outook or Mac Mail) with a new message window open. The new message will have the "To:" filed filled in with the email address that you specify the email be sent do.

The tag to create an email link is called a mailto tag.  It is similar to the hyperlink tag, but instead of a webpage opening it opens your visitor's email client to make it easier for your visitors to send you an email.  Here are two examples of links that will allow your visitors to email you:

  • <a href="mailto: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ">Send me an Email!</a>
  • <a href="mailto: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. '>Need help?  Just send me a message!</a>

As you can see, instead of the normal link, you are directing the hyperlink to open the visitors email client and send an email to the email address specified after the "mailto:" attribute.  Most websites now use forms to make it easier for your visitor to communicate with you as this method is not used as often, but using the mailto tag is a quick way to allow your visitors to contact you.
