Verifying Webmaster Tools & Google Apps
In this tutorial:
Before you can use Google Webmaster Tools, you need to verify that you own the domain. In this tutorial we will show you the common methods for verifying domain ownership:
HTML File Upload (Recommended):
- Login to Google Webmaster Tools. (If you do not have an account you will have to sign up for one)
- Enter your domain name, and click the ADD A SITE button
- You will then be on the HTML file upload page. Click the link in Step 1 to download the verification file.
Now we must upload the file to your account, in this example we are using File Manager in cPanel: - Login to cpanel.
- Select the File Manager under the Files section. If you are prompted to select a directory, choose Web Root, and click the Go button.
- On the left side of the File Manager, choose the main folder for the website you are verifying, then click the Upload button.
- Click the Browse button, then select the file you downloaded
- Now, go back to your Google Webmaster Tools page, and click the Verify button.
You will then see a message stating "Congratulations, you have successfully verified your ownership of http://example.com/."
Add a tag to your Home Page:
- Login to Google Webmaster Tools. (If you do not have an account you will have to sign up for one)
- Enter your domain name, and click the ADD A SITE button
- On the next page, click the Alternate methods tab.
- Click the HTML tag option, and it will drop-down and provide a line of code. Copy the code.
Now, we'll paste this code into the <head> of your website. This can be done several ways, in my tests I am using File Manager in cPanel. - Login to cpanel.
- Select the File Manager under the Files section. If you are prompted to select a directory, choose Web Root, and click the Go button.
- Locate and click your main website file, which is usually index.html, or index.php, then click the Edit button on top. In my tests, I am editing the default.htm file.
- If the Text Editor box pops up, click the Edit button:
- Paste the google tag we copied in step 4, then click the Save Changes button.
- Now go back to the Webmaster Tools page, and click the Verify button.
Sign in to your Domain Name Provider:
This options lets you choose your registrar from a list, then provides specific instructions. The steps in this method will differ based on who your registrar is, but both can be accomplished in the Advanced DNS Zone Editor in cPanel:
- Create a TXT record
- Create a CNAME record
Verify with your Google Analytics account:
If you use Google Analytics, Google can verify your ownership using your code. This is the easiest way to verify the account if you already use Google Analytics.
Verify with your Google Tag Manager account:
You can also verify your domain with your Google Tag Manager account.
