Hi,

I'm setting up a website with forum for a private group. I'd like the "home" page to be visible to the world along with the link allowing a visitor to register for access privleges.

I'd like this login/password registration to act as entrance into all of the remaining pages including the forum. Is this possible? It seems I'm only allowed to create a single password myself for a specific directory and then distribute that single password to those I want to grant access to. This would not serve my needs.

Thanks.

Hello again kfinnis,

I did a little research and found information on two popular forum software packages, phpBB and SMF.

Both applications allow you to control access to your forums, here are urls with more information on how that is done in each one:

phpBB:
http://www.phpbb.com/kb/article/phpbb3-permissions/

http://www.phpbb.com/about/features/

SMF (note "Allow guests to browse the forum" If you do not select that option, only registered users will be allowed to browse the forum.)

Hope this information helps!

Thank you,

Christi N.

Hello kfinnis,

Great question about controlling access to your forum.

Honestly, it depends on the forum software you are using whether or not it has that feature and, if it does, how to enable it. I'll do some research and let you know what I find.

Feel free to answer or edit your question and let me know if you have a particular forum software you are already working with.

Thank you,

Christi N
