Hey! So I changed the password for one of my MySQL user accounts. Now the phpBB sites associated with that user account won't open.
"
QL ERROR [ mysqli ]

Access denied for user 'XXXXXXX_phpb237'@'localhost' (using password: YES) [1045]

An sql error occurred while fetching this page. Please contact an administrator if this problem persists.
"
I've gone into the config files for those sites and changed the password to match the new one, but the error is the same. What to do?

Hello,

Thank you for contacting us about your MySQL password error. As far as I know, there is only one configuration file for phpBB (the `config.php` file). Is that the one you edited? The phpBB documentation has a full guide on rebuilding that file with sample code. You can also try backing up your database, installing phpBB in a new test directory, and see if you can link your database with the new credentials. It's always possible you may need to reset the password again, just to make sure you are using the right user/pass combination.

Best,
Christopher M.

Yes. That's the one I edited. The plural "files" in the question is because I used the same password/user for two databases.

I've "changed" the password (to the same thing) about ten times hoping for a different result, but with no success.

If changing the directory is a success, then what? I don't want it to be running in a different directory, obviously.

So I've tried creating a new user and adding them to that database. Config file has been changed to reflect this. I'm still getting "Access denied" for the previous user. Is a "flush" of some sort required so that it even gets as far as interacting with the config file?

You can try double-checking to make sure that the user associated with that database is listed as a "Privileged User". We have a full guide on assigning users to databases.

I've added all privileges to the new user. You don't think it's relevant that the error message still states that the old user is the one denied access? It doesn't seem as though it's ever encountering that config file.

I have read through a few phpBB forums and it seems some users have fixed this issue by creating a new database and linking to the new database in the `config.php` file; I advise trying this in the meantime while I research further.

It is possible (though I haven't been able to verify this) that the database was corrupted after the password update. I experienced the same error when trying to replicate your issue.
