We have been testing on WebHub with the intent of moving our website over time. Unfortunately our current hosting company "lost" their servers and our site has been down for 7 days! We have to make the move to Hub now.

Not having done this before, can we switch our domain and/or nameservers without having access to our current host servers? And do we need to do both the domain transfer and change the nameservers. I'm pretty sure we need to change the nameservers but can we transfer our domain too?

Thanks in advance for a quick response - we're desperate!

Hi TurquoiseArmadillo,

Take a look at the following article, I think it will help answer your questions:

Domain Transfer vs. Nameserver Change

Can we switch our domain and/or nameservers without having access to our current host servers?
You will need to contact your domain's registrar to update your nameservers. Most hosting companies are not registrars, so they register your domain name for you with a registrar. You can do a whois lookup to find out who your registrar is.

Do we need to do both the domain transfer and change the nameservers.
No. To point your domain name to our servers, you only need to change the nameservers.

I'm pretty sure we need to change the nameservers but can we transfer our domain too?
You can transfer the domain name to our registrar, but you don't have to.

Thanks,
- Brad

That helps a lot, thanks. I had read the articles, but managed to confuse myself a bit. I realized after I was finally able to talk to the registrar that we did not need to transfer the domain. Thanks again for your prompt responses -- we will be moving to the Hub soon!
