So everything works fine if I enter / as root for the website, but when I try and follow the instructions to use the public_html file as root, it throws up an FTP error
cannot open folder public_html/. Access denied. The file may not exist or there is could be a permission problem.

Not found a way to fix this and let my website be seen by the world.

My files are going into a webmaster folder in public_html

Any ideas as to what I am doing wrong here?

Hi Chrisflowersmd,

I'm sorry you're having trouble publishing your site through Dreamweaver. Are you using the cPanel user name or a different FTP account with Dreamweaver? If you are using something other than the cPanel user name, what folder is that FTP account assigned to? Please note, FTP accounts cannot go above the folder they are assigned to, so if your FTP account is assigned to a folder under public_html, it will not be able to access public_html (which is a level above that folder).

Please see one of our articles on publishing with Dreamweaver for additional details:

Main Domain Server Settings in Dreamweaver
or
Addon Domain Server Settings in Dreamweaver

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have additional questions or need further assistance.

Regards,

Christi N.
