Hello Evie5,

I'm not sure which website you're referring to, however, I'll explain for two possible situations. If you wish to show our default.html file, that says "Site under construction", then simply find your index.htm, index.php, or index. html file and rename it temporarily to index.OLD or index.BACKUP. This will allow the DEFAULT.HTM file to be read first. There can be no INDEX file operational at that time. You can also create your own under construction page if you wish, check out creating an under construction page
The other way you can deal with this is IF you are using Wordpress. If you're using Wordpress, look for a plugin called Maintenance mode - this will bring the site down with a message saying the site is not available. You can still work on the site when it is in this mode. Here's a link that exlains about the mode: Wordpress in maintenance mode.
