I have a website at a different provider. I plan to transfer domains eventually. Meanwhile, I am trying to set the new site up and would like to develop and showcase it - without the domain being transferred yet. What do I need to do to achieve this and what would be the URL for the new site until the domain has been transferred? (I will be using a Wordpress template for the new site)

Hello Fmm_atspc,

I'm assuming that you are transferring the domain to our hosting service. If you're using our service, you can use the temporary URL (which isn't really temporary) that you get when you subscribe to our hosting. I can't tell you what that URL would be unless you have an account. If you have an account, you can find it in the technical details in the Account Management Panel (AMP). The Wordpress installation configuration would need to be setup with THAT URL to use it. Otherwise, if you're trying to show the website from YOUR location using the original domain name without transferring it, then you would need to do a HOSTS file mod on your computer. This would make your computer "think" it's going to the domain name, but actually coming to our server. I'll give you two articles that detail both of these suggestions:

  • Setting Up Wordpress on a the Temporary URL

  • Modifying your Hosts file in Windows. If you're on a Mac, then it would be this article: Modifying your hosts file on a Mac

  • The one drawback to this is that when you have to transfer your domain over for real, then you would need to modify your configuration files AND the database entries in Wordpress in order to update it with the new URL.

I hope this helps to answer your question!
