I have 3 domains. What is the difference between are file and a directory? Some were added by WHH. What are necessary? In some of my websites the same file is a file and a directory in another. in one I have a directory called "cgi-bin". In another a file called ".ftpquota" I am trying to put a google file on my website to identify me as the owner to google. On one website this worked where the google thing is file. On the others, it is a file on one and a directory on another. What should it be?.

Also, why do you put light blue writing on a light blue background? I can't read it.

Hello,

Thank you for your question about files and directories. A file is a single file item, like a php file or an html file. A directory is most commonly called a folder. It can hold many files.

As to what is necessary, that is all relative. Many people do not need the cgi-bin folder, but others do, depending on what they are using on their site. I would not delete any file that starts with a . like .htaccess or .ftpquota. These are called 'hidden' files and only show up when you have cPanel specifically set to do that. They commonly contain configuration information that can break things if they are removed.

Your main domain's main directory is the public_html folder. Any file you need to add for Google to recognize that domain should be added there. If you have other addon domains, they will have their own folders with the name of the directory (example.com, for instance) where you will need to add the Google files to in order to be recognized.

I am not sure which item you are referring to with blue on a light blue background. Our basic colors are dark blue with light blue writing in the header. Was that it?

Kindest Regards,
Scott M
