I'm sorry you were having trouble with your WordPress site. I see from your account notes that an extra popular_posts function was being added to the functions.php file and was resolved by removing and re-adding themes. Errors such as this can be caused by some plugins or themes. Anytime you have errors with WordPress, it's a good idea to start with some basic steps to track down the cause of errors.
