We're also having this problem. Searches for similar error language said that is could be a hosting issue as certain permissions or server configurations might not be set appropriately. One alternative is to do a manual install of 3.6, but our site is heavily customized so resetting all the Wordpress options wouldn't be time effective. This is our failure message: ________________ Warning: touch() [function.touch]: Unable to create file /tmp/wordpress-3.tmp because No such file or directory in /home/ameri317/public_html/wp-admin/includes/file.php on line 179 Warning: unlink(/tmp/wordpress-3.tmp) [function.unlink]: Operation not permitted in /home/ameri317/public_html/wp-admin/includes/file.php on line 503 Download failed.: Could not open handle for fopen() to /tmp/wordpress-3.tmp Installation Failed _______________ Moderators, please forward this issue to your programming team. A solution cited a couple of years ago for this problem was to grant "755 recursive permissions," but that solution may no longer be viable.
