I've been doing quite a bit of work with my WordPress site but seem to be getting a lot of down time with the message "Error establishing a database connection." No other details given.

Any chance I could have goofed something on my end or is this a host issue? I have noticed that in the cPanel the WordPress icon disappears during my downtime. Pretty weird.

Edit: I'm expecting a lot of traffic on Monday, I have to turn my redirect on until I can get an idea of what's wrong. Let me know if this makes it tough to answer the question.

Hello paleodenim,

I checked your site and it is connecting properly currently. If you get this type of error and the site has been connecting properly previously and you have not made any changes, then it is highly likely that the server is under some temporary load. This can happen when other sites on your server experience a high number of visitors, or even when a script runs amok and eats up too much of the CPU capacity. One of the first things to slow down is the database engine, causing the error you saw.

I am not certain that was the cause, as I would need to check the server load at the time of the incident, but it seems the most probable.

If you do experience the issue again, please contact our support department (open 24/7) while it is occurring so they can troubleshoot the issue for you. Be sure to validate your account with either the last 4 digits of the credit card on file, or the current Account Management Panel (AMP) password.

Best Regards,
Scott M
