Issue: | Bash Vulnerability Identifed CVE-2014-6271 |
---|---|
Status: | All of our custom bash shells have been patched and recompiled across ALL shared, VP node and internal servers. |
Who is impacted? | Our team of System Administrators were actively monitoring the logs of all servers for any malicious attempts to exploit the vulnerability, and we’re confident that no breach or exploitation occurred prior to deploying the patched versions. |
Estimated time until resolution: | This issue has already been addressed. |
We will continue to monitor the situation very closely. We expect proof of concept (PoC) exploits to be authored and distributed over the next few days. There is also the potential for variants of the original vulnerability, which may require further patching if other attack vectors or methods are found.
GNU Bash through 4.3 processes trailing strings after function definitions in the values of environment variables, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted environment, as demonstrated by vectors involving the ForceCommand feature in OpenSSH sshd, the mod_cgi and mod_cgid modules in the Apache HTTP Server, scripts executed by unspecified DHCP clients, and other situations in which setting the environment occurs across a privilege boundary from Bash execution.(NVD)
